Married to a Coupon Drugstore Cowboy

It's true. Our latest addiction is couponing.

And yes, I'm using the word "coupon" as a verb.

Hey, at least our addictions are good for us, right?

We used to think that going to multiple stores was a waste of time,
but now we've discovered the secret of drugstore deals!

Both Jason and I feel like we've been missing out on such a great secret for so many years!
But don't worry. I'm not going to leave you hanging out there to figure it out for yourself.
I'm going to fill you in.

The drugstore chains like CVS and Rite-Aid have some amazing deals, and when you pair them with coupons, you can get some items for next to nothing.

We got all of this:

for $1.30 .

NO, that's not a typo.  That's one dollar and thirty cents!

Here's the receipt in case you still think I'm lying. It's a little blurry, but you can still see the total.

How did we do it?

We pair coupons from the Internet or from the weekend newspaper with drug store deals.  A lot of items come with an "Up-Reward" which is basically a coupon that prints at the end of your sale that can be used toward any future purchase on anything except prescriptions, beer, cigarettes etc.

The trick is to check out using all of the items with Up Rewards first.  At the end of the sale, you will get a bunch of coupons (they can be used in conjunction with manufacturer's coupons).  Next, check out with all of the remaining items that don't have Up Rewards.  Use the coupons that printed toward this sale.

It sounds confusing, but it's really not.  Trust me.
And it takes a little bit of planning in advance, but it's worth it.

One of the best deals we found this week was for pistachios at Rite-Aid.  Eight ounce bags of "Wonderful" pistachios were on sale for buy one get one free.  Regularly, these bags of pistachios are $5.00 per bag, so with the deal, they were $2.50 each.  However, we had a coupons for $1.00 off  of two bags of pistachios, so we ended up getting two bags of pistachios for $4.00.  That's a $6 savings!

It's official.

We're obsessed.

Do you think we're crazy yet?

We are.  You see, we're on a mission with our New Year's Resolution.

The other night Jason was looking through the drug store ads and matching up coupons - cutting out those that matched up with the weekly sales.  He's discovered that using a coupon with a buy one get one free deal is the best savings.

Out of nowhere he got all excited and said "I'm a coupon drugstore cowboy!"

He makes me laugh.  God I love that man.

He's asked me about five times this week when the weekly circular comes out because he can't wait to check the deals.

And my poor coupon drugstore cowboy got his feelings hurt when he shared his excitement about drugstore deals with family and friends and no one seemed to care.

It's okay though Mr. Coupon Drugstore Cowboy.
If you're reading this, I care.  I think your latest addiction is really cute!

Anyone else out there care about coupons and deals?
Leave a comment and cheer the Drugstore Cowboy up!  We want to hear how you're saving in 2011.

  1. I did the same thing and got 4 bags of the nuts! Also rite aid has special K cereal on sale BOGO, here is a link to a coupon for BOGO up to value of 4.49 so you can get 2 boxes of cereal for free (or in my area I had to pay a whole 30 cents). http://www.specialk.com/Products/Coupons

you have to fill out some stuff to get the coupon and when prints hit the back button a couple of times and you can print out two, giving you 4 boxes for free. Both my husband and I have emails so we did it twice so we got 4 coupons and 8 boxes of cereal. Best part, you get UP rewards on all the cereal!!

  4. I too love the deals that you get with coupons!
I used to use the coupons all the time , then I got away from it cause time was being used up by my job.
I am thinking I should get back to using them.
As it is I travel to 5 different stores for groceries, because I find the deals in the paper and only purchase the things I want and only when on sale at these stores.

When you were young I don't know if you remember waiting in line for a while because the cashier had to go through each coupon and you would say to me is she done yet? LOL
Now look who is couponing! LOL

    With Love,
    Mom

  7. I have been using coupons for years. Something that makes it easy is using sites like Grocery Game(small monthly fee) or Pinching Your Pennies(free) to help you use coupons with store sales to get amazing savings on products! This way you don't have to cruise the weekly circulars. Welcome to the club:).
