Circular Saw Lullabies

I was reading to Imani tonight when she told me, "Shh . . . listen."  I listened carefully.  I didn't know what I was listening for.

"Do you hear it?" she asked.

"Hear what?"  I questioned.

"The sound of the hammer.  I like the rhythm.  Sometimes it puts me to sleep," she explained.

"Really," I asked.  "It doesn't keep you awake?"

Her big brown eyes looked up at me in wonder.  "No.  I like to hear it.  And the saw in the basement.  Sometimes I hear that too.  It makes a humming sound like  'zzzzzz . . . . zzzzzzzz . . . . zzzzzzz.'  It's like it's whirling.  It's soothing, isn't it,"  she asked innocently.

"Yes, sweetie, it is" I said.  I kissed her gently on the cheeks and turned off the lights, the hammering continuing downstairs as Jason hung the framed keys on the wall.

Those are the sounds of creating a home.  Sweet dreams.

  1. I love Imani's comment...I used to think the same thing when my father was sawing wood. I just loved it!

  3. What a cute post! You know she's meant to be just like her momma when she's older. And really, I'd never thought about it, but I can see her point. She makes the noises of a saw sound lovely.

  4. Stephenie,

Figures this is one of the only posts that I missed! So sweet and speaks volumes on Imani's love for music -- she hears the beauty in sounds when others would just hear noise.
When she is an adult and working on her own diy projects these sounds will trigger wonderful memories of her childhood.

    Your Friend,
    Deborah
